Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 19 - Supplement It?

Yesterday was a great day as it was my wife's birthday. We had a good time celebrating her notching of another year even though we each included a slice of birthday pie in the celebration. Got a work out in yesterday which I hadn't planned as time made itself available, cool. But today, today I am feeling more hungry than I have in many a day. Could it be that slight slip off the health-wagon with piece of pie that has my system hearing to the hunger pains more today? That is my guess. Whatever the cause they can make all the noise they want, I am not listening though.

Been pondering what else I might need to consider down the road to help my progress, or maintain it, or in general improve my health period. Nutritional supplements seems to be a gaba-gazillion dollar industry which means people are buying and using. Myself, other than a multi vitamin a couple times a week ( I rarely remember to take one ) and the recent use of a protein shake or bar as I've started my mission here, other than that I am not making the supplement industries stock tick upwards. I did some reading on the what's out there to see if I am missing the boat and I really can't tell. Seems more support for using them than not, but no real consensus on what to use and when or really why. Part of the confusion, at least for me, is that there are so many different supplements. Thousands of vitamins, minerals, oils and combinations of them. Powders, liquids, gels, oh my! Some of my favorites as I read, Ginkgo biloba; sounds like what I order in a Chinese restaurant. Chondroitin, wasn't that one of the monsters in those bad Japanese films that battled Godzilla?

Not sure any of these are really needed if I eat balanced meals. But then maybe my diet isn't as balanced as it should be at the vitamin & mineral level. How about you, do you take supplements routinely to shore up your diet?

Thursday is here; does anyone ever care about Thursday? We all look forward to Friday. Then Wednesday, hump-day, gets some cheer as it is the halfway mark to the weekend. But Thursday, which could be seen as Friday Eve, gets no real love does it. No idea why I thought of that and no more reason why I thought to jot that down here. Good mood I guess.

Happy Friday Eve to all!

  1. I haven't started taking vitamins, but it is in the plan. Today's food isn't as vitamin packed as it should be, for one reason or another, and if you are eating the right amount of calories to lose weight, you're probably not getting all the nutrition that you need.

That said, talk to your doctor (if you have one). They can help you find what dietary supliments you should be taking and in what quantities. If you are trying to lose weight you probably want vitamins that help with digestion, fat burning, and heart health.

    Here is a website

  2. I'm not a big fan of nutritional supplements especially when your diet should be sufficient. Strive for that instead. While supplements can be a good "insurance policy", I think it can turn into expensive insurance as well as something that you start to rely on instead of careful eating.

  3. Cant see why getting Vit C in a pill is better than eating some fruit meself. It may be worth edoocating self on what vitamins and such are found in what foods. I think there is a really good rule of thumb though - seems to work, and that is that the more colour you put on your plate - the better balanced your diet is by way of vits and mins...its a fact.

  4. Hey there! I do take Vitamin C everyday. I try to eat my fruits and veggies too. But I always got sick pretty quick all my life. And these little pills seems to help me with that especially. I feel less tired and more energetic (I'm sure cos sometimes I run out of my vitamins and cash is not always waiting around for me to go get them) whenever I'm using my supplement. But that doesn't mean you need to use them too. This is just my experience.

I also think a lot of people use a lot of supplements without knowing too much of some vitamins is actually harmful. So I guess I also support eating your vitamins in terms of furits and veggies.

I have to admit whenever I have a little piece of cake, candy, etc the next day I'm starving all day. It's part in my head, part my blood sugar... Just get over this one day and you might just feel better tomorrow. Good luck!

  5. Marie, Hi - nice to see you here... thanks for the link. On that page was another link under 'Related Articles' that I checked out; Dietary Supplement Helper for Men. This was a quiz you took to determine what you should take. My results were: The combination of a multivitamin-multimineral for men, plus an additional Omega 3 supplement will help you to maintain your health. How accurate this thing is I have no idea. Likely does have a wide error factor, has to, but still I found it interesting if for nothing else to just get an idea of what I may want to think further about.

Kyle, I share your skepticism for the need for supplements if your diet is right. Not saying I fully understand what a 'right' diet is but I think i got the basics down.

Blue, that is a neat rule. I'll have to see just how colorful I can make my next salad.

River, Hi - nice to see you here too... do you just take vitamin 'c' as a supplement? Or take a multi-vitamin of which I believe all had a ton of 'c' in them?

    Thanks for the thoughts everyone!

  6. Marie, I tried to post to your blog on your latest blog post but for some reason could not. I'd hit 'post a comment' and nothing would happen. Odd. Anyhow, here is what i wanted to say...

Marie, Hi - thanks for stopping by my blog today. Always nice to meet a fellow blogger for the 1st time. I've never heard of PCOS until I started blogging a few weeks back. Have seen it referenced in a number of blogs I follow or visited. I'm not going to pretend to know much about it medically really, but from this post of yours I can tell it has been difficult to come to grips with. Yet you certainly are blesses as you did receive the gift you wanted when PCOS seemingly was not going to allow it. A very heart warming story and it was so good to read on to find the good in your struggles with PCOS. Best to you in your challenges. Look forward to following on here as you succeed in losing that 155.

  7. Hi Patrick!!, Firstly, thank you SOOOO much for stopping by my blog and supporting me during my "bad time" as i call it. I had a few moments and stopped by here and wanted to say. i really love your insight on things on things and look foreward to following your progress as well.

Now on to the meat. I know what you mean about supplements. Everytime i talk to someone different, they have a different opinion on whats the "greatest" thing in the world to take. Me i'm not so much a pill taker but the one i do take when i can remember. (or get the notion) Is fish oil, (the only one in common that all of my doctors recommended) and a centrum multi-vitamin. When i started suffering from hair loss, i added a hair, skin n nails vitamin to the mix. But as i said, I probably use them so sporadically they have no effect but good luck on what you find!!

  8. Hi Patrick, sorry I've been missing a few days. I'm not big on supplements but have taken some at different times. I never found any benefit from anything other than the multi-vitamin which I only seem to remember to take some of the time these days. I use to take glucosamine/chondroitin for my arthritis which did help but have found that since I dropped the last 40 lbs my knees are much better. I've never been one to take pills and I seem to seldom remember. I am sure there is some good in some of them but they just don't seem to be for me. I think it's become just a huge money market really. Just my two cents.
