Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 376 - You Have Me Wondering

source
From yesterdays post this is what I learned from your answers, and what I am left wondering...

1- When was the last time you exercised and were you satisfied with your effort?
About 50/50 here, actually just a slight edge in favor of those who are satisfied with their exercise. For me, lack of recent exercise had me answer dissatisfied. No doubt there is plenty of room for improvement here for many of us. Which has me wondering...
What would make your exercise more satisfying?

Myself, when my exercise is filled with variety I am my most satisfied with it. I am too easily bored. One day I have to be outside for cardio, then the next session can be indoors. Or one day a walk/jog is good, but the next session shouldn't be the same walk/jog. Same for strength training, I don't want to feel the burn in the same place from one time to the next. If I do, I am likely doing the same exercises and ho-hum will soon set in.

2- Do you find Angel Food cake easy or hard to pass up?
Unreal, just not even close to real. I LOVE angel food cake. And none of you gave it any love at all. Hello... it is ANGEL food cake! I find it very hard to pass up. Maybe I just a sucker for angel's? Or sponges?? Maybe angels who give sponge baths??? Hmmm, I wonder...
What are you a sucker for?
Not an easy question really. I am a sucker for confidence. Engage me with confidence and decisiveness, you will have my attention and maybe more. To serious of an answer for you? You don't have to answer as seriously :-).

3- Salad dressings, do you do the right thing by eating salads but misuse salad dressing?
Another 50/50 result with this one showing a slight edge in favor of those who misuse dressing. At times I do misuse dressing, at others I do not. Probably depends upon the quality of the salad stuff I am dressing up. This dangerous inconsistency with salad dressing needs to be addressed! I can only sit here, look to the sky (or ceiling blocking the view of the sky) and wonder...
Seriously, how flippin hard can it be to exhibit salad-discipline?

4- Twinkie The Kid versus King Ding Dong, in a cage match to the death, which one wins?
Twinkie The Kid had the early lead but King Ding Dong love votes came in late and we have a tie. Not sure how we can break this tie, keep voting I guess. My fellow Chicagoland'ers feel free to vote multiple times as you always do in elections. While we wait for this to be resolved, excuse me for this bit of wondering...
Has anyone else ever eaten their twinkie, or ding dong, with a fork?
Yes, I said "else", thus I admit; I have! (a twinkie)

5- Tanning booths, is increasing the chances of skin disease/cancer tomorrow worth the risk to get a great tan today?
While some kind words for tanning in general, I didn't sense any true love for tanning booths. Myself, I can't help but laugh. I am a Caucasian of Irish, Scottish, and Snowman heritage. I've never tanned a day in my life; not on purpose. Obviously, after my recent dances with melanoma I am not likely to pick up the tanning hobby anytime soon, or, ever. On this question I have no further wondering.

6- Are you going to achieve your dreams of living healthy, living long, living happy?
Lots of believers here that they are achieving their dreams. Very good to hear. For this question I have many follow up wonderings...
If you aren't working towards our dreams, then we are just existing for the sake of existing; right?

Of all of your dreams, which is the one you going to realize next?
And what will/are you doing to make that dream reality?

Of all of your dreams, which is the one you want more than any other?
And how confident are you that you will realize that dream someday?

I'll get back to you on my own dream wonderings.

Day 375 - Answers, Questions, And...

source
It dawned on me last night that I never provided the answers to last weeks riddles & such. So quickly here are the answers are should anyone have been waiting for them and wish to refer back to the questions...
1- The castle photo was a trick question as it really isn't a castle. It is the 'Castle Entrance' to the cemetery that is across the street from where I lived in the 70's. My sister should have recognized that!
2- President John Adams
3- Alfonso IX of León, King of León & Galicia
4- No Excuses
5- This was a joke, so there was no answer :-)

Ok, that bit of business over, I have a new set of questions for you; not as playful, a bit more serious, but every bit as fun...

1- When was the last time you exercised and were you satisfied with your effort?
2- Do you find Angel Food cake easy or hard to pass up?
3- Salad dressings, do you do the right thing by eating salads but misuse salad dressing?
4- Twinkie The Kid versus King Ding Dong, in a cage match to the death, which one wins?
5- Tanning booths, is increasing the chances of skin disease/cancer tomorrow worth the risk to get a great tan today?
6- Are you going to achieve your dreams of living healthy, living long, living happy?

Final thought for the day; it is said you become what you think about. Hmmm, can anyone dispute that?

Day 215 - Getting Goofy Questions

Having lost some weight I get the joy of chatting about weight loss with people. Some want to know what I am doing, I am always willing to share; eating smarter and moving smarter. Others want to know my thoughts on what they themselves are doing; lord help them for asking my opinion. And some want to just argue, as long as they can take what they dish out; bring it on.

Along the way I have been asked some really goofy questions. Goofy meaning some are just silly, some are just asked in poor context they almost make no sense, and some are a blending of obvious and obnoxious. I thought you may enjoy pondering them just as I have. You may even choose to answer them, I can't say I always dignified each one with an answer when I was asked; but since I am tossing these out to all of you I shall at least comment on each if not answer just for you.

Q: How fast can you lose weight?
A: Um, honestly, instantly if need be; a quarter-pound drop is usually a trip to the bathroom away.

Q: How do you lose weight after pregnancy?
A: I have lost weight, not given birth; the difference should be fairly easy to see on a male I think.

Q: How are you going to lose your final 10 pounds?
A: A legitimate question, but I was asked after I made it known I have another 60 pounds I want to lose. I am just focused on the next 2 pounds, the next 10 at most has my attention. Those last 10 pounds, I don't know; Ex-lax muffins and coffee maybe?

Q: What would you estimate your current weight to be?
A: OK, seriously, I do work with allot of very smart people; so I can't explain how this actually rolled off someones lips. I replied, "The same as I did tomorrow".

Q: How can you look thinner faster than you actually lose weight?
A: Oh lord, that's an easy one. But we all have to learn it from the master himself, Thornton Melon. If you don't know what I mean, rent Back To School, watch and you will be enlightened.

Q: Can you share some weight loss success stories?
A: Well, if you don't like my story currently in progress, sure. Go to http://responsibility199.blogspot.com/ and scan my blog roll.
I answered this question with that answer twice. Just last week the last person to ask was too impatient to do as suggested and asked for links to some of the better ones. Being the nice guy that I am, I shared these five. I don't like to pick favorites, I don't mean to because I am grateful for each and everyone of you I interact with. But in trying to help with this slightly goofy request I chose these five. They are currently in various stages of their own journeys to shed obesity once and for all and they intensely grab my attention...

Have you been asked any really goofy questions?

Day 88 - Red, White & Brown

Wednesday, Wednesday - Did you know today is Wednesday?

Here are the answers to yesterday's Sam riddles...
1- ANSWER - Meat
2- ANSWER - Pour two pancakes and brown the first side. After the first side is done, flip one, take the second off, and pour the third pancake. After another minute, take the first one off, flip the third one, and put the second one back on. Cook both pancakes until finished.
3- ANSWER - An egg

Hope you enjoyed the riddles. Luke's brain got these unraveled pretty quick, well done. His first try at #3 was a caterpillar, which I got a chuckle from... don't caterpillar's have meat? :-) If I had offered a prize for first to the answers it would have been a shiny new car, but, I forgot to offer a prize. Maybe next time.

Rice, I like rice; I love wild rice. I haven't eat allot of rice recently as I've tried to keep carbs in check a bit. No, I wouldn't say I am on a low carb diet, or any diet plan. My old eating habits were a display in carb overload. Today I keep them in check better while replacing much of the bad carbs I used to eat with fruit, veggies and better protein choices.

There you see a picture of a box of wild rice I bought recently. Unfortunately I have not been able to enjoy it yet. The other night I was going to make this rice as a side dish, that is, until my kids saw the box and let me have it. They love rice, but only, and I mean ONLY white rice. And more specifically they greatly prefer short grain rice cooked in the rice steamer over long grain versions. Bottom line, they love white sticky rice, and that is the only rice that exists in their minds.

Debate on - I countered that there are tens-of-thousands of  varieties of rice on this rock we call home and that we ought to try a few of them. Red, White & Brown, all sorts of rice colors, shapes and sizes to explore and adore! Silly me, I am talking to teenagers. They have all the answers and know it all, right? On that day I relented and put the wild rice back on the shelf. Simply I was not in the mood to make it, watch nobody else have desire to eat it but have plenty of desire to complain about it. That fun will we'll have on another day.

When you have six mouths in the house you will frequently encounter these challenges where some like an item and others don't. Fish and veggies are constantly being debated here. Rice not so much as we usually just go sticky. But now that my wife & I are working on getting healthier I am finding myself a little less tolerant to unwillingness to broaden palate horizons. As we are adding healthier options and trying new things we too would like to see them be a bit more desirous of doing so.

That said, I am a firm believer in not needing to ever eat a food you don't enjoy. Brussel sprouts, an absolutely hideous food according to my palate. You can pound out the health benefits of brussel sprouts in bronze and I won't capitulate to eating them. So then who am I to suggest, let alone insist, they take a left turn from sticky rice to a dish of wild rice? I mean, they are still eating rice, a healthy choice, right? It is not like they insist on having a side of gummy-bears with the chicken.

What foods do enjoy that you wish your family shared your desire for?
