Day 45 - Busy To Lose

Hope all enjoyed the holiday weekend. A good weekend for me and my clan. And generally a healthy one too. Sunday we had our family gathering and while a majority of the food was fried, it was largely a catered event, I didn't over eat and kept the belly filled with water and veggies & fruit.  Got in a couple of exercise sessions too. Saturday my son & I thrashed the home gym and I also hit the elliptical for 30 minutes. Yesterday my wife & I went for a walk around the Nippersink forest preserve. It was just a 1.3 mile walk around the place. We were planning to do a 2nd loop but the rains were so near and we just didn't care to get caught in the rain. And rain it did. So in the end the holiday weekend did no damage to me in my efforts to get healthy.

Back to work today, I am sure that is the same story for many of you. While I would certainly like to spend less time working than I do, or not have to work at all; I do find that it is easier to maintain attention to healthy behaviors on work days. Simply there is less time for the mind to wander to temptation. Oh sure, before I started this mission over 40 days ago my mind did wander to temptation, and it still does. But the difference now is that I have adopted an attitude that doesn't allow me to give into temptation so easily. Being at work helps shore up that attitude. When tempted I can dive into my work and more easily push temptation aside.

Do you find keeping the mind and hands busy helps with living healthy? What do you look to busy yourself with to push temptation aside?

Hockey update: Blackhawks beat Philly in game 2 last night and lead the series 2-0. Sweet, but not getting over confident or complacent. Last year the Red Wings took a 2-0 lead on the Penguins to then lose the series 3-4. So nothing has been won yet. GO HAWKS!

  2. Glad you had a great weekend! Sounded wonderful & yes, the hockey win, GOOD!

    I think keeping busy really does help as long as one can fit in those healthy meals/snacks along the way & not skip a meal due to being too busy which can lead to overeating because one gets too hungry.

  3. I totally really on being busy to keep my healthy habits in check. A while back I wrote a post about the way home improvement projects keep me from mindless eating. Once I get my home in order, I'll have to find a job!

  4. Yes, remember what Philadelphia did to the Bruins not too long ago! The Bruins were ahead in the series 3-0 and lo and behold Philly won 4 games in a row. They are a tough team and don't give up easily!

    I definitely find that sometimes the mind keeps wandering to junk food - so like you I find that keeping busy helps a lot. If I have time on my hands I like to write on my blog, or read other people's blogs! It really helps.

  5. Good for you guys on the walk. It was sunny here all weekend. I try and keep really busy it seems to keep my mind off eating as much. If I have to sit I try and keep my hands busy. Thanks for your comment on my blog today.

  6. Hmm...I found that when I was busy at work, I was stresed...and when I was over stressed, I'd prefer to go out to eat to medicate on junk rather than stay in and eat something more appropriate.

    Luckily I've been telecommuting since mid-February with little options for grabbing a burger or Chinese buffet.

    It will certainly be interesting to see if/how things have really changed when I return to the normal workplace.

  8. Thanks for the good words everyone. Seems there is some consensus on keeping busy and keeping healthy. Good point Kyle that there is a difference between being busy and being stresses. I think there is something to be said about control there too. Being busy but being in control is key. Often when we are stressed we don't have as much control as desired over what we are busy at.
