Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 277 - Who Knows Why I Did...

First, many know Dawn, some may not. Dawn has just underwent surgery to lift / re-do herself after losing 200 pounds in recent years. Her long anticipated journey to this day has arrived and last word received is she is back in her room and presumably fine. Hit her up with a kind word in your travels through the blogs today.

In search for an old photo of me I randomly went to a year in out digital library, chose 2004. I found this beauty of me receiving an early Christmas gift. Wow, that is one big dude there. Somewhere in the 320's I am guessing. Ugh, Double Ugh!

Yesterday I came home a tad early to beat winter traffic during a sleet & snow downfall. Not a storm, just a steady all day drone of the stuff; enough to double my usual 40 minute commute.

So being home early what do I do? Well I workout of course. Did cardio the past two days, thus today is weight training day. So I changed from my business casual garb & jumped into a mix-match of sweat pants & a tshirt and head into the basement.

A good 15 minutes of stretching and then a round of core specific exercises I do from time to time; meaning I am not as consistent with core exercises as I ought to be. From there on to the upper body workout. Not 10 minutes goes by and I get bored. Oh the workout was going fine, I just had a wandering mind. Probably because I was alone in the basement minus a cat chasing who knows what over yonder.

My anti-boredom solution? Who knows why I did this but I grabbed my iTouch & made a video...

Ok if you watched that perhaps you have validation as to my boredom. When the idea to do this hit me I had ideas of making a few more. But after viewing this take I figured not a good idea; how exciting is watching someone bench press? Instead of deleting it as my intuition suggested, I am not one to keep a chuckle to myself, hope you enjoyed.

Couple of clarifications from the video...
  • In it I said I had 45 plates on to get started, I did have 45s on but it wasn't my first set; this was my 3rd. I meant get 'started' on the video.
  • The bright light, it is what it is; a light bulb. Hope it wasn't too annoying.
  • This was actually the 2nd take of this video, the first was about 11 seconds long. That's when I remembered the shirt I was wearing. I turned it inside out for take-two; it is a very politically-sharp shirt and I really don't like to mix my politics in with this blog.
  • I pointed out the "Fitness Warrior" towel I have hastily hung on the background for motivation; if you aren't familiar with Bobbie's goods check her out.
  • Finally, I really chose not to make another video because messing around with setting if up was interrupting my workout too much. Oh I'll fiddle with it again someday just for fun, maybe you can watch me do sit ups soon!

What do you do when in the middle of a workout and boredom hits?

  1. You crack me up! What do I do when boredom hits? Unfortunately, I haven't found a good answer to this yet. Right now, I just keep pushing on in miserable fashion. Every now and then I run through my to-do list of stuf for the day but otherwise, it's just painful.

  2. Cool, Patrick. I would not want to video myself exercising right now though. Too much huffing and puffing going on so I don't get bored yet. Boy, that will be the day, when exercise is no longer a challenge.:)

  3. You are a freaking Rock Star!
    Not boring at all.
    Might try a video myself.
And yeah, Dawn is a trooper today, too!

  4. WTF!!! How can you get bored with lifting weights!!!??!!! I LOVE IT! Well, I have a whole gym to do all kinds of stuff but... no boredom for me!!! LOVED the video though. You are friggin hilarious & I have the Fitness Warrior towel & sweatshirt!

On the core stuff.. remember my back injury at the end of last year and I DO CORE work like crazy.... try to fit it in if you can!

I would make videos if my gym allowed. Every so often I sneak a cell phone pic...

  5. LOVED the video Patrick!!!!! Remember, it's not HOW MUCH you bench press it's HOW YOU BENCH PRESS IT. I know. It took me a long time to figure that out with much guidance. (ask Jody!)

When I bench press I am usually only doing 15 or 20 on each end, plus the bar. But I will go slow, work on form and damn it will kick your ass!!!

Do more of these videos. I think it's awesome!

  6. Good morning Patrick. I have got to say that was the nicest way to "meet" you. To hear a voice that goes with words. I like that. I also like your blog and have become one of your "followers". I am so impressed with all that you've done. I've done some reading and will do a bit more, at least until the kids wake up.
Thank you so much for stopping by. I hope that you have a great day today. God Bless!!!

  9. I love seeing folks in video. You know, you read the blog, see pics, but a video is always fun.

    Love your voice. Very manly!

And yeah, watching people bench pres...not so exciting. But hey, just keep talking. The voice works!

  10. I don't do much with weights right now. If I work out in the living room I plan it when I can watch something interesting. If I'm walking outside, that's it's own entertainment.

  11. You're a much braver person than I am, Patrick. There's NO WAY I would share a video of me exercising. LOL Keep up the great work, my friend! :)

  15. Love the video, it's great to put a voice with it! You can definitely see a huge difference in the picture vs the video- kudos to you!! I have the capabilities to make a video, but not the courage yet- you're brave!!

  16. I was glad to hear Dawn came out on the other side okay, too!

I do videos of my workouts as well. When I start to get bored, I will do circuits to move faster (and get done faster!).

  17. I agree with Lori, always love putting a voice with the face. :) To help with boredom with home workouts I many times play concert DVD's. Depending on my mood I might listen/watch U2 or something more like Metallica, or sometimes something mellow. The energy from the DVD really helps with my energy level!

  18. I get bored easily during a workout, especially if I've been on the treadmill for an extended period of time. My key to success is to have a huge variety of music on my ipod! It keeps me going strong :)
