Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 148 - 43% Progress

Good morning fellow bloggers, hope your weekend is going great thus far.

This weeks weigh in is not one I am jumping up and down about. Although in keeping perspective I should be just fine with it. Giving it further thought I suppose I am just hungry for more.

Exercise wise I have had an off week. Not so much due to the docs orders I received Friday to limit exercise to walking for a week. Rather a flare up of gout mid-week has had me way to sedate. Gout is something I have issues with 2-3 times a year. I don't like moaning about injury or illness so I didn't mention it earlier in the week.

If you don't know what gout is, that is good. It means you don't have issues with it & I sincerely hope you never do. Long gout story short it has taken me until this morning to flush the gout out and get back to walking. My wife & I arose this morning and went for a good walk before doing some errands. Felt so good too.

After you've been exercising regular for nearly five months when you take a break you feel it when you aren't getting the exercise in. You miss it, and get frustrated especially when you can't. Which, is actually a positive change. Six months ago if someone told me I can't go exercise today I would have shrugged it off and probably would have smiled too. What difference five months and 50+ pounds can make in ones attitude.

Today I am holding at 43% of the weight lost I have set out to lose.
That's 52 pounds lost over TWENTY weeks; 0.5 of them this past week.
Today I weighed in at 268 pounds.

Reflecting on this past week I have come to this conclusion. I simply did not adjust the eating enough to account for my inactivity. No matter how many calories I eat, I need to strive to keep the intake 500 or more calories less than what I burn whether I am just burning calories sitting and working,or,whether I am getting in exercise.

I'm looking forward to a better week; how about you?

Glad you were able to get your walk in! It's a beautiful time of year to walk.

  2. My hubby is suffering from a bout of gout....so painful! What do you do for it?? The Dr. gave him some medication, but it made him feel horrible..dizzy, nauseous. When he told his cardiologist about the reaction to the med, he said it was not compatible with the other meds he takes and there really was nothing to give him. On the advice of a friend, he went to the health store and bought black cherry capsules and has been taking them for a couple of days with little relief. Someone else suggested loads of water, but due to his heart condition, he can't drink a large amount of water.....so I just wondered if you had some suggestion of anything he could do. Anyway, congrats on the .5 lb. anything is better than gaining!

  3. Gout doesn't have a sure fire remedy that I am aware of. Diet is almost always what triggers it so you have to pay attention to what you eat and when you get a flare up you really need to be sure not to eat anything that will compund the problem.

Otherwise I flush it out with heavy water intake. I also get some relief from the pain by taking naproxen sodium nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aleve.

They help, but there is no fast remedy. Most flares ups I get take 4-7 days to work through.

    I wish your husband well.

  4. You are doing fantastic Patrick. Keep up the great work.

I totally agree with you on when you miss a workout session after many months of training your body - you can tell the difference!

  5. Gout = Yuck!! It must have driven you crazy to have to cut back on the exercise. But you still lost 1/2 a pound. That show you that you are eating well and good for you. Always looking forward to a better week ... sending you healthy thoughts across the miles.

  6. I think .5 is great--two stick o' butter+ Especially when you haven't been able to get your workouts in. 52 pounds in 20 weeks is no slouch either--WEIGH to go! Sure hope your gout isn't triggered by . . . hot sauce.

  7. Hey Patrick -- a loss is a loss, either way. I'm happy for your loss! :-) I think your goal for 500 calories less than what you burn is a good plan.

I can't relate to your feelings on exercise, though. I really don't like exercising at all, to be honest. I do it, sure, but I don't like it. When I go a length of time without exercising (like, um, right now) I don't miss it, but I DO get that naggy GUILTY feeling. :-)

Happy Sunday! Hope you're having a nice afternoon watching some football!

  8. "You miss it, and get frustrated especially when you can't. Which, is actually a positive change. " - I have experienced the same thing! After I broke a bone in March I was so frustrated at giving up certain things. But I did manage to get on the elliptical and get some walks in while holding on to my broken arm:) I hope you are back up to full steam soon.

  9. Mike has gout so I know how miserable it can be. Glad it's better now. 1/2 a lb is a 1/2 a lb, congrats!

  11. Found your blog today. And love this "what a difference 5 months and 50+ pounds can make in ones attitude." It is amazing. I've given 100 lbs away and have 60-ish more to go. So chin up on 1/2 a lb. A victory's a victory, no matter how slight. :)

Congrats on your success fo far, I look forward to reading.

  12. Patrick.. hope all is better! I so understand that missing the exercise! But as I mentioned in my comments yesterday, I was down for about 7-9 days a couple years ago & I just adjusted the food.... it ain't fun but it is what it is.. hang in there!

  13. So it sounds like you have "revved" up your metabolism to the point that it's burning even though you weren't exercising quite as much this week. Got to love it!

  14. I so understand the exercise comment, I do 20 minutes every day and when I don't ... I just don't feel right, it doesn't sound like much but it has made a HUGE difference this last year! half pound is okay, better than a gain!!

  15. Patrick, I hope you start feeling better soon. I know what you mean about missing exercise. My own has been hit & miss this month but I just keep trying.

  16. Patrick, I think 52 pounds in 20 weeks is totally AWESOME!! You are doing amazingly well.

Sorry about the gout, as a nurse (retired!) I know how painful it can be, not from first-hand experience, fortunately.

  17. Take it easy on yourself. You had gout and couldn't exercise and you still lost half a pound. Thats brilliant. I used to get gout until I went on the paleo diet. but yes I feel your pain!
