Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 139 - My D'Oh Tonic

Up at 4:30 a.m. yesterday and went out for a walk on my neighborhood 2 mile loop. I don't know if itis walking first thing in the morning that makes a difference, or if I'm just on a performance up-tick, or what, but I obliterated my PR's for that loop & my 1-mile walk time, 31:53 and 15:30 minutes respectively. The loop time was more than 1-1/2 minutes faster than my previous best. Maybe it is the darkness and that my eyes can't wander off as far & lose focus. Whatever it was, I aint complaining.

When do you exercise, a.m., noon, p.m.? Have a preference? Liz posted yesterday on the pro / con of when we exercise; I enjoyed this read and am sharing it here for you to enjoy as well.

Wedding day today for our friends Eileen & Brian. Have the day off work, leave about noon'ish to get my wife where she needs to be, then the wedding with the full one-hour plus Catholic mass, then a reception complete with dinner and dancing and all the typical reception stuff. Perhaps home by midnight at the earliest. Wish me luck in my upcoming fight against today's food temptations.

On Sunday I reported a 2 pound loss for last week and my pleasure with it. Indeed I was pleased. But, I know I left something on the table. No, I'm not talking about an extra serving of pork chops; I did leave that on the table on purpose. However I also made a mistake that saw me leave on the table the opportunity to lose more weight last week.

What did I do, I drank tonic water. I usually drink a 20-24 ounce glass three or four nights a week. I like tonic water, always have. About a month ago I was looking for an alternative to diet soda, and water, and remembered tonic water so I scooped up a few 2-liter bottles and have been working on them.

What's wrong with tonic water? Myself, I thought nothing at all, I mean; it's just carbonated water right? Enter my wife. She comes home Saturday morning from the grocery store with DIET tonic water. Huh? What do you mean diet, it's water with bubbles and quinine; how much more diet can you get?

For validation I go check the nutrition facts on the bottle I've been drinking, ARGHH! It is loaded with high fructose corn syrup - WHAT!!! An 8 ounce serving is 100 calories. Yikes, on nights I've enjoyed a glass I've sucked in an extra 250 - 300 calories. D'Oh!

Down the drain that bottle went, and I thanked my wife. She saved me sooner rather than later; imagine if I hadn't discovered this for say 3-6 months from now? Perish the thought.

So, had I not been so dim-witted I may have had a hair better progress in the bank. Oh well, I am really not mad, not at all. Over the past 136 days you may have picked up on that I am very calm headed; not easily upset or put off. Live and learn, love and laugh; and laugh I did at my tonic water error.

Have you made any diet errors?
Please say you have, I can't be the only one; can I?

Responsibility 199 - Gotta Do It!!

  1. Dont you just hate hidden calories. Your certainly an inspiration Patrick, these 4.30 am workouts are making me feel ashamed of my lame excuses!!!

  2. Live and learn, I guess. Tap water is good enough for me and I am CHEAP too. I don't wanna pay for fancy stuff and then have more junk to throw away.

Hooray for wives! Everyone should have one.

  3. I am with Lanie, give me plain ole tap water, although I do filter it ;)

  4. me it was ketchup. I was shocked and horrified to find out that ketchup has calories...and a LOT of calories at that. I never realized that it had so much sugar. It threw my whole world upside down upon the revelation!

  5. Amazing......up to about a month ago I had the same problem , I was drinking tonic water , or Gin and tonic in social circles because I was also under the impression it was low calorie....

I drink fizzy water now with a touch of low calorie squash.

  6. High fructose corn syrup is the devil!!! Gotta be careful - they will sneak that in and not tell you it is in your food/drinks. The dedication to keeping your body in motion is awesome. I would like to hear a report out one day that you soaked your shirt to the point it drips sweat when you take it off. THIS will be taking it to the next level...

  7. Exercise?
    I go out walking
    After midnight
    Out in the moonlight
Just like we used to do.
    And water?
    I run mine through a counter-top distiller.
AND I have C02 machine to make my own bubbly!
    I can't recommend it enough.
Online or at a fancy-foody store near you!

  8. I've done that with things like bagels and realized after that the information is for 1/2 a bagel :(

  9. I had NO idea it had fructose crap in it.

I like to workout int he am for the thrermogenci benefits. However, i'm not good at getting up early due to sleep issues so i actually workout in the PM. I'd like to bag an extra workout at lunch but I often don't becasue i don't want to leave my hole.

  10. Always. Read. Labels.
    Lesson Learned.

    Enjoy your wedding!

  11. Serving sizes is where I've messed up. Like cereal..3/4 c or ice cream 1/2 c. Gotta measure stuff like that. I exercise right after about 4 pm. I can't imagine getting up before work...that snooze button would be calling. Good for you! Have a great time at the wedding!

  12. Wow! That is nuts. Who knew it had HFCS in it? Glad your wife came to the rescue!

  13. I hate it when that happens!! I think we've all had those moments when we think we are doing well and making good choices only to learn we weren't. This is a learning process.

  14. Yeah, hate when that kind of stuff happens...thank God the wife figured it out before much damage was done! Have fun at the wedding and good luck with avoiding the tempting foods!

  15. When I make a diet mistake, I am usually COMPLETELY aware of my error, but I do it anyway! Lol!

  16. I never imagined simple tonic water would have corn syrup! I need to thank your wife too !! LOL I've always heard exercise in the morning is best. It not just ensures you get in your exercise for the day, but it also helps stimulate the metabolism, to help burn of more calories throughout the day. Hey, every extra bit of help is welcome, right?!! Have fun with today's festivities. The Catholic Mass may be an hour long, but at least you get lots of exercising during it (sit, kneel, stand, sit, kneel stand ...) :D Just remember, back away from the cake, Patrick! Congrats on your personal best this morning too.

  17. Answer 1) I work out 11ish or 1ish in the gym, or later afternoon outside. I like that time because I'm done with school but it's before my family is out of work. If I say i'll exercise at night something comes up. Dress shopping with my cousin, dinner with my aunt, a really good TV show. There might be better times but heck it's the fact that I'm actually exercising that important.

Answer 2) Granola bars. I used to think they were a healthy snack but sometimes a seviing is 1/2 a bar or the nutrition is worse than a pop-tart or the calories are closer to a full meal! How is the diet tonic? I never cared for it so just started adding more gin and a little regular tonic :)

Happy Wedding!!! How many calories will your wife burn standing during that service compared to you sitting? HAHA celebrate the couple and have a great time!

  18. I knew about tonic water, but the calories in bagels caught me by surprise too. What really is staggering though is the calories in meals at a restaurant - even when you are trying to make healthy choices.

  19. I work out whenever I can squeeze it in...sometimes middle of the day, but mostly in the evening.
Did not know that about tonic water...and I have watched my friends drink a lot of gin a tonic lately for that exact reason.

I have a wedding tomorrow too--will probably only be a 20 minute service, it's at a golf course...then party party. I am not so much worried about the food as I am over indulging in bar! :)

  20. I would have never guessed tonic water had HFCS in it, learn something new everyday. Way to go on the new PR you are doing terrific. I have made lots of errors over the past 3 yrs with not reading labels well. I think it happens to all of us sometimes. A biggie recently was about pretzels, I have chosen them over chips for the kids for a long time now because they are like 0-1g fat and only 110 calories a serving. Well Trina pointed out to me that they are also full of sodium. Yep, 400+mg a serving some brands. So now I am very careful to look at the sodium content on my pretzels to make sure I'm getting a brand with about half that amount of sodium or less. Always room to learn something new. Way to go on the 2 lbs this week too I must have missed that post.

  21. I am definitely a morn workout person.. nothing can interfere later! Saying that, plenty of studies out there telling you what time is best to exercise. The thing people have to remember is that it does not matter if you don't do it.. THE BEST TIME TO DO IT IS THE TIME YOU WILL DO IT!!!! Just because some say morn is better & others say late afternoon is better, if you don't want to or don't feel good doing it then & you will stop, what good is that anyway. Do it when you feel best for you!!!!

OK, off my soap box.... congrats on the PR & all else. I know you will do great tonight! And never forget to read the labels!!! Even "health food" can be bad...

    Have fun!

  22. gotta read dem labels, I check points before I eat anything, I ate a Costco hot dog and was LOVING it, went home and found out why!!! 570 calories!! 33 grams of fat!!! never again!!!

  23. Thanks for making link to my pros/cons list, I like that they all have their benefits and that the main thing is that they're all the BEST time. Lately I've been doing my cardio in the morning and my resistive training in the afternoon. But I have the benefit of not working right now, so trying to take advantage of a double work out.
