Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 171 - Fueled Up Simple

Let's give Tuesday a little love shall we.
Do you consider this to be the second or the third day of the week?

On Monday my eating was good and I did get in some cardio. While waiting for my sons soccer game to start I switched into my walking shoes and did three laps around the high school campus. Three laps in 45-50 minutes covering 3 miles.

Today I offer a simple picture of the simple foods I bring to work each day. Today it is a plum (huge one at that), a gala apple and a banana. Also my daily can of V8 and a bottle of water which I'll refill 2-4 times on any given day.

Simpler foods provide us with better fuel; is that a true statement? Oh I am sure there are some great articles out there that debate this into oblivion. Honestly I am not certain, but, if forced to pick true or false; my gut would have me say true.

As a hobby of sorts I love to get busy in the kitchen. Actually calling it a hobby is incorrect, instead it comes from a desire to eat food that tastes good. I didn't get to be obese eating food that tastes like the rubber end of a plunger.

Many of you know my joy for cooking from my occasional spread of photos of my work on the grill, the smoker or the stove. And believe me, I share only a small smattering of this pleasure here on the blog.

Whether I'm working on a meal that is an all day affair or a quick grab and go, I do try and keep the recipe as simple as can be and the ingredients even simpler. That paella recipe on the 'stove' link is about as complex as I like to take it. Oh I am not daunted by the complex, hardly. Rather my years have brought me to believe that food tastes better when approached & prepared simply. As well my recent mission to get healthy has me believing that the simpler the food itself, the better it is for you.

Agree, disagree? Huh, you want me to pass the Cheetos, now cut it out!

  1. "Getting busy in the kitchen" not sure what you are referring to :)
The simple foods got me by for the first month. If it were not for apples bananas mandarin oranges and pretzels I don't know where I would be today. TRUE!

  2. Well, I am all about simple!!!!! Is that because I am not a great cook so the ingredient list must be short & sweet & easy! ;-) Works for me! PLus short & natural & whole foods!
I do love watching cooking shows though!

  4. I think simple is definitely the way to go. Without getting all preachy (b/c hello! I'm fat), I think the chemicals in processed foods is what's leading to a lot of health problems people are facing today. As for just simple recipes...I prefer them because I don't have a whole lot of time at the end of the day to indulge in the complicated. BTW, Tuesday is defiitely the second day of the week, even if calendars disagree with me.

  5. I'd agree, Patrick. I think simpler is better for us, but that is just my personal opinion.

Great job on getting in that extra cardio!

"Getting busy in the kitchen" ... then you show us your banana. You have designs on the Mrs. again, I can tell ...

    :D

  6. If only cheetos grew naturally on trees or in the ground and were full of fibre, low in saturated fat, high in protein, low sugar and salt...the world would be a much happier place.

    ;o)

  7. Tuesday is the second day of the week. The weekend is a separate entity.

I agree that simple foods are generally better fuel. I think it's important to really taste what you are eating too, which is made easier when we keep the foods simpler.

  8. Tuesday is the second day of the week, Patrick, everyone knows this. Weekends are free.

I agree with Phil. Pass the unsalted, whole grain Cheetos!

  11. Ummmmm, what Phil said - lol. The KISS method is definitely the best and you are right, Patrick, depending on who is writing the article and especially why...you can usually spin it in the direction you want to. That's why us dieters are so confused. Oh and Tuesday is the second day of the week and it is my 6th favourite day of the week. Friday is my favourite.

  12. You reminded me of something my brother once told me -- that if i were to ever open up a restaurant it'd be "normal food done good." What he meant was that I'd keep it simple. My favorite spice to add to food will always be black pepper and a little bit of salt. I would rather steam something instead of sautee it. I'd rather just bake/roast something than filet it and turn it into some weird contraption held together by toothpicks, strings, or gravity.

And it always seems that the food that is easist to prepare is also the most satisfying, especially when it comes to not having tons of stuff to clean up.

  13. I'm with the KISS method also. I had a beautiful, simple salad for lunch today and feel better than I have in days. Even just had balsamic vinegar for the dressing. mmmmm

I am not a big cooking fanatic, but may have to try that paella! I just had REAL traditional paella in a spanish home last week for the first time ever and it was so delicious!

I find the simple foods fuel me best: fruits, raw or steamed veggies, oatmeal, salads, broiled fish, sweet potato, whole grains.

My problem with getting into more complex cooking is I end up wanting to add ingredients that aren't as nutritious or "fueling" :)

  14. Second day of my workout and personal week. Third day of our work week.

Agree with simple being better and I use that to create simple recipes. I aslo love to cook and grill.

  15. I know if I get too complicated with cooking a dish and my kids aren't sure what's in it then they're not likely to like it. KISS for sure.

Except my husband like more complicated dishes...

  16. Simple is simply best. Not much to add (pun intended).
