Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 120 - 38% Progress Trois

This morning the scale let me know that I have lost 1/2 of a pound this past week. In total I have lost 46 pound in SIXTEEN weeks; for a third week in a row I sit at 38% of the weight I want to lose. Today I weighed in at 274 pounds.

Since my goal is to lose 1.5 pounds a week I am not in much of a celebratory mood over this loss. Sure it is a loss and that being the bright side I should look to it. Much better than if I had gained 1/2 of a pound, no?

A little reflection of the past week, well my post on Friday summed fairly well up what I had done, good & bad. Bottom line, I have not been consistent enough this past week; the pat two weeks; and the scale reflects that.

Right after that weigh in I hit the forest preserve. Went to one I had not been to previously, Singing Hills...

Through it runs a trail which connects a number of preserves in the county called the Millennium Trail. I walked a segment of it which is 1.5 miles, and back, so I got in a 3 miles walk before breakfast. Felt good. I look forward to exploring more of this trail.

Today, eating has been spot on. Had some family over for lunch, grilled burgers. Burgers?? Yep, good old burgers. However knowing my weigh in a few hours prior I made smaller burgers than I otherwise would. Four months ago I would have made 1-pounders. Recently I have made 1/2-pounders. Today they were about 5-6 ouncers. I had no bun, and heaped salsa and onions on it versus sugary sauces. Also had a lettuce wedge with more salsa on it and a drizzle of blue cheese dressing for some decadence.

That is what I have done today. What is now important is what I do tomorrow and this coming week. I am still in a bit of a mood even though my choices today have been good ones. So as the evening gives way to night here I am going to ponder just what I need to affirm myself to in order to have a better week ahead.

  2. I was in a similar situation in July and only lost 0.2 for the entire month. I was told to just keep on doing what I was doing. So I did, and the scales did (slowly) start moving downward again.

I am new to your blog and yet learned all your healthy habits, but just watch your calories and keep up your exercise. Drink your water. Watch portions, and no seconds. Focus.

(Next week you will probably be giving me this same advice.)

  3. It may not be the weekly loss you wanted, but it is still a loss. More importantly, you know where you went wrong over the past week or two.

Jo's advice is spot on. Stay focused and keep at it :)

  4. Patrick, you are a focused and positive guy. I admire your progress and your interesting posts. Congrats on your loss this past week, (even though small), but your overall loss is amazing. Keep it up, my friend.

  7. I totally understand the frustration of the scale stalling out, but try to focus on losing 46 lbs in just 16 weeks! That is awesome, Patrick.

  8. Well, Patrick, I re-read your Responsibility 199 commitment statement. Your kids are very lucky. My father didn't take it quite as seriously, believing he always had tomorrow to tweak things. He didn't. The little extra burger here, the gravy there, the "just a few pieces" of candy ... they added up internally, silently, to deadly consequences. Who knows what that one last thing was, but sometimes we don't get warning shots over the bow and our bodies just quit - period. I know if my father, for one instant, thought the extras he let slip back into his diet would cause his early demise, he'd have taken it more seriously. YOUR children are lucky, because you do take it seriously. None of us is perfect, so it is unrealistic to think we can live up to the ideal all the time. My only advice to you is to not beat yourself up over "less perfection" - some weeks our bodies just lose more than others, even if we eat perfectly to plan. Revisit your commitment statement, to motivate you to readjust your choices slightly (you STILL made great choices) ... and then enjoy your children as they bask in these last days of summer vacation. I'm proud of you for losing forty-six pounds in a mere sixteen weeks - amazing! Keep up the good work. It is motivation for the rest of us. How many people have to actually punch new belt-holes, for Pete's sake?!! In fact, for a half-pound loss, you should be going on a victory stair climb (arms raised above your head, Rocky-style) ... every ounce counts!

  10. Patrick, we have better & not so better weeks. A loss is great & that 1.5 will not happen every week. With the wife stuff, glad to see you get it going in a positive direction!

  11. I salivate over the burger + salsa combo. That sounds delicious and like a wonderful food choice for a picnic.

You're doing a great job losing weight. You know what it takes to lose a consistent amount of weight every week. Just keep your eyes on the prize and don't let little daily detours derail you from your final goal.

Congrats on your loss, even if it was small. A loss is a loss!!
