Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 292 - Come On, Out Plank Me Already!!

Snow, yes, we have allot of snow. Schools are closed, my wife & I are working from home, winter can kiss my round yet knavish hindquarters...

Moving on... last week I spread the news of Josie's (Yum Yucky) plank challenge known as The Planktastic Plankathon Challenge. Hit up her link there and check it our if you have not yet done so and enjoy the videos of the challengers taking on this tough yet fun exercise.

Myself, I made a go at it on Saturday and chose to do the Straight-arm plank hold, I did better than I expected by holding position for 90-seconds. Josie was cool enough to include my video on her page (link above). She surprised me when she noted that I was current male challenge champ for that hold.

Huh, over-weight / weak-core me is the champ? Never would have guessed that.

Pondering that I figured the male bloggers out there who follow Yum Yucky just haven't participated. Oh some have in different categories; Reinaldo of DarnFitness put up an insane 6 minute Forearm plank hold.

Quite a few female bloggers have taken up the challenge in various categories, again check out her blog to see them in action. There are even some doing slightly easier holds such as the knee plank or the assisted plank. My fave, 88-year-old MamaMcFoodie getting her forearm plank hold on! Her video alone is worth the visit!

But I am sure that is just a matter of time until other male bloggers play along with Josie. But until they do, I suppose I have to challenge myself to up the time in this grueling category.

And I did just that. Here is my effort Tuesday afternoon, I nudged the time up to 2 minutes!...

What it is about this challenge I like I am not sure. Perhaps because it is quick to do; a minute or two or a few is all it takes if you've got game. Perhaps it is because I realize my core is weak and this does wonders for addressing that. Perhaps it is because I like feeling my whole body quiver and quake and know it is not a bad thing. Perhaps because I find it FUN!

Now, ENOUGH about me. What about YOU?
I am CALLING out my fellow male bloggers, you got game?
No way 2 minutes should be the championship mark men!
Female bloggers, many of you inspire me to move, so I know you got game!

Pick a category, get your video going and get in the fun being had here if you deem yourself healthy enough to take this challenge.

Responsibility 199 - Gotta Do It!!

  1. I could possibly do the knee version for a few seconds but not the full plank hold. Gotta let the toe heal some more. You are doing great though. I admire anyone who can take on that challenge.

  2. Holy Cow...2 minutes?! That's excellent. I have such a weak core...but I may have to try this just to see what I can do!

  3. You rock Patrick!!!! I love the planks & quite honestly, when I do stuff at the gym like push-ups of all kinds & v-up with the stability ball, I am always holding a plank per se in those positions & I actually hold a plank after each v-up with the stability ball.... it is amazing how many exercises incorporate a plank position & we don't think about it.. well, I DO! :-)

  4. Hummm, gonna have to check this out. I can hold the elbow plank for a minute, and like you said it's a quick excercise and so good for you. Thanks for introducing this too me. I'm off to see what it's all about.
Take care Patrick and have a blessed day!!

  6. P.S. Don't drop your head with the plank, it pulls it and your back out of whack. Look up 3-6" up on the wall or whatever is in the area. I know cuz I had to go to the chiropractor when I started doing them. Just an FYI.
    Keep the vidoe's coming. Blessing!!

  7. perhaps it is my guilt-driven Jewish upbringing, but as a fitness trainer, I never ask a client to do a plank while I watch. That is, if they bleed, I bleed -- at least with planks. I do anywhere from 10-20 minutes worth of planking per day, 6 days per week, usually 60 seconds at a time. I'm beginning to feel very planked out.

  8. In just over three weeks I'll be planking too! I suspect my abs, which have done no core work in almost 2 months, will be screaming.

  9. I enjoy planks. Before my hernia and repair I LOVED ab burn, but I can't do lying abs anymore. Planks to the rescue! :)

  11. I really have to try planks, but I don't think I'm quite strong enough to maintain one for too long...but I can always try.

  12. My core is weak as well. I'm going to try the plank thing, maybe I can do it, if not I'll build up to it. Good for you, getting the male challenge champ!

  14. I just did 2.55 in straight arm. Man that is not fun on the lower back-scares me that it will go out on me. But you are taller than me so that is much tougher. I'm gonna try to break her 4 minutes tomorrow. Love a good challenge.

  21. Very interesting. I will try my plank tonight and give you a time. I feel a challenge... I like challenges... It reminds me of that Cosby episode where the tap dancer challenged the Cos to a tap dancing competition.
