Responsibility 199, what is it?

Responsibility 199 is a belief; I believe that to be healthy and to increase my longevity I need to weigh 199 pounds or less...
Responsibility 199 is a need; I need to reduce my weight, reduce my percentage of body fat, and the elevated threat of disease my present condition presents...
Responsibility 199 is a mission; I recognize that achieving 199 will be a challenge, perhaps the hardest I have ever undertaken...
Responsibility 199 is a commitment; I acknowledge that I must commit to action, commit to change, commit to myself and those I love to achieve this mission, to increase my longevity...
Responsibility 199 is ME.

Day 111 - TGIF & What

I've never been much of a TGIF guy, Friday is a great day don't get me wrong; but I don't usually pine for it to get here. This week however I have been so looking forward to it. It has been a long week, of course much longer for my wife than for me. Still, it is good to have her home, have the long week of getting ready for the hospital, the surgery, the hospital stay... as I said so good to be home.

Now it is a six week haul for her to recover and get back to work. So far so good; finding out where she is most comfortable and resting as best she can. Thanks again for all of your well wishes this past week.

Exercise is on my agenda today. I last got in a good session on Monday. Now that we are back home, I need to get back to the exercise. I feel the lag in exercise too. Just a few days away from it my energy is a few notches lower than it had been. A nice affirmation I suppose in the importance of exercise.

My diet this week has been good. Eating has been more sporadic and not as disciplined in terms of eating at good intervals, but the contents have been wise. Looking forward to getting back in a solid groove on both eating and exercise.

I also am in the mood for some fun. The work day will be done soon enough, and even though things around here will below key for a while, let us have some fun. The picture up there, could it be... A few weeks ago, Day 93 I believe, I posted a picture for your pondering pleasure which we had fun with. A visual riddle if you will. So...

Any idea what it is?

Whoo-Hoo, Homeward Bound

My wife has done well and is being released to go home today. As soon as the wheelchair gets here we gone! Ah, it is here...

Day 110 - Holy Sleeping Stapler

Whoa, It is Thursday already. Keeping a sense of time this week has not been easy. Thanks again for all of the warm wishes & prayers for my wife & family. She is doing good, a bit better than expected in terms of recovery pace. There is a chance she will be home today, just a chance, say 30% or so. And if she doesn't that is fine, better to stay another day so the first day back home is not any harder than it need be. We'll know by Noon today where she will sleep tonight.

Now that I am dropping some weight and it is becoming noticeable I get into a few conversations with folks asking me what I am doing, telling me what they have done, etc... they are welcome chats. Yesterday one such chat occurred and we got a tad off on a slant about weirdest diets tried.

Myself I have not tried anything too odd. The oddest may have just been being very calorie restrictive, say 800 or so a good decade or so back. But the guy I was talking too had a few doozies he had put to the test over the years.

The Sleeping Diet - He bought into the notion that when you are asleep you don't eat. So, to help increase his sleep he would sedate himself as often as he could and in a sense went on a starvation diet. He lost weight, but he also gained new problems like severe headaches and bad bowel issues. YUCK!

Ear Stapling - yep, just what it says. He pierced the cartilage of his ears. Doing so is said to reduce your appetite. He couldn't say why it worked and in fact he said it didn't. He was warned that it only works for a few weeks before the body gets used to the staple and no longer recognizes it for its appetite suppression. For him it wore off in 2 days and on the 3rd he was back at McDonalds to makeup for 2 days lost time. Huh?

The Holy Diet - from the bible apparently there is a verse that lists natural vegan foods which you restrict yourself too.He forgot the verse. No food listed can be cooked. He actually liked this for a time as he learned a new respect for eating vegan and lost a chunk of weight. But he fell off the wagon at a party and realized he couldn't commit himself to the diet any more than he had committed himself to God,which he hadn't. Geez...

What is the craziest diet you have ever attempted?

Day 109 - Eeyore's Got It

Good morning everyone. Hope all are having a fine week!

A huge thank you to all of you for your heart felt posts & emails yesterday for my wife & our family.

Her surgery could have brought us devastating news, or, excellent news. Thankfully it was excellent news. Bottom line, the problem has been removed, no cancer in sight more importantly. Now all she has to do is heal & recover.

No doubt the events of yesterday were all in God's hands and we thank God for the resulting great news. We also look to God for a speedy & full recovery for her. She should be home Friday and then home for a month or so before being able to get back to work.

Her father stopped in the hospital gift shop and got her a "Chewy-Bamba". A what, you say? In the picture on the left, a stuffed chihuahua that goes by the name of Chewy-Bamba. Press the button in his foot and he dances, shakes those maracas and sings La Bamba, and does so rather loudly. If you knew her father, you'd completely understand why he thought that was the appropriate get well gift.

On the right is one of my Eeyore's. Yes, one of them, one of about 30 I have. A different story for another day. But I must say that I agree with Christine, in her comment on my post yesterday she stated that 'Eeyores are chemically formulated to heal whoever is hugging them'. She says it is Scientific fact, now I don't know about science having proved this, but I know it is certainly true.

That Eeyore there in the picture, that is our Get Well Eeyore. Whomever is ill, gets him to hang out with. It started back in 2001 when I was recovering from cancer surgery and he hung with me through the coming months of treatment. From that point on he had the job of Get Well Eeyore.

His last tour of duty was the Spring of '09 when my Mother had surgery. He hung with her a week or so. When he came home he was somehow dirty. My Mom doesn't recall how he got dirty so she naturally blamed me. However it happened he needed a bath, so into the washing machine he went. And without proper thought, he then went into the dryer.

Look at that picture closely, see anything odd about him? I set the picture to a larger size than I usually post just for your review. See it?... No, ok check out his hair, or the black mane of hair more specifically. See it?? Yeah, it melted in the dryer! So our Get Well Eeyore is also cooler that most other Eeyore's now, because he sports an afro!

I don't know why, Eeyore & his 'fro crack me up.

I'll be at the hospital a good portion of the day today and then this evening I should be able to get back reading & commenting on your blogs.

Be well everyone!

Day 107 - Stress Triggers Chow

Yesterday I made that smoothie you see there. It had been a while since I made one, we had a bunch of fresh ingredients on hand, so I went for it. Yes, I served it in a beer glass; I am a guy. What is it, well lets see if I can remember. I don't always measure ingredients, actually I seldom do, for this smoothie, I was just throwing stuff in the blender that looked good before giving it a whirl. The ingredients; greek yogurt, milk, strawberries, a banana, a wedge of watermelon, almond butter, sugar free cherry preserves (I admit I am addicted to cherries), crushed ice, uncooked steel cut oats. Probably sounds weird when written out, but if you tasted it without knowing the ingredients I bet you would have enjoyed it. I sure did, very yummy.

STRESS - stress is pinging me today like sonar ruins a submariners day - My wife enters the hospital tomorrow morning for surgery and will spend a few days there before returning home to recover for a month. We've both done well to put that reality aside while we vacationed, but with the vacation over, back to work today; we can't keep it put aside for much longer. Stress is something I usually keep at bay very well, actually I thrive in it. But this stress is different than every day stress, I think. It feels, smells and tastes differently, therefore I likely need to deal with it differently, or do I?

I've seen a number of bloggers chat about stress and how they succumb to eating poorly when stressed. I am no different, I can probably attribute a good half of my obese-ness to eating because I was stressed, bored, pissed, whatever emotional state I looked to sooth through food.

Today, I am stronger in the head than I used to be and thus at less risk to stress eating. But, being committed to getting healthy and being healthy for the rest of our lives we know that this is a daily effort. Each day we must make a mental commitment to good choices before we can then succeed at actually executing them. No matter what the day brings as it wears on, stress, joy, misery, amazement, smiles, jeers, whatever; we have to leverage our mental strength to not eat because of emotion.

Sounds so easy doesn't it? Ha! If only it were.

The fastest way to set back those weight-loss goals is to give into emotions and eat to calm them. So how do we not do that which we know will harm us? First we must learn what triggers us down that dark path, the path of the stressful chow down.

What triggers your stressful chow down?

For me idiots stress me to a bad place. I know, idiots is a bit strong. When working with others who refuse to learn their craft to be able to contribute at a high level, they drive me to eat burritos. Nothing wrong with ignorance, we are all ignorant at times. If you work hard to learn hard and deliver hard at what you do, no stress on me working beside you there. But if you are careless about your work, then get outta my way and pass me that burrito!

Another is complete lack of organization that causes lost time, money, effort; whether at home or work. That said lets understand I am not uber-organized, but, I am organized enough in all things to be productive. In the past I have been super organized about eating, so organized that I had the cookies right next to the candy bars which were right next to the twinkies, etc... so being organized has a bad side too I suppose.

When spinning my wheels because I am in an unorganized mess, I look for king size snicker bars. If all are working to improve the situation and its organization, no stress on me working alongside the effort to get better. But when the complete mess around us is accepted and ignored, then get outta my way and pass me that candy!

So, lesson objective; know what triggers you and watch out for them. Then, have a page in your mental playbook ready to go to when stress triggers you. Everyone's playbook may look different. Here is mine...

Each day as I start I have a mental plan of when & what I am going to eat across the three meals and two snacks. When stress pushes me, I pull out that playbook and am reminded to stick to my healthy eating plan. Just having that playbook reminds me I am committed & dedicated to Responsibility 199.

If I must eat, in my desk at work, truck glove box (who has real gloves in there) & pantry at home I keep these places ready with healthy snacks. At hands reach I have a healthy choice awaiting, makes it easier to succeed and suppress the trigger to chow down.

An alternate to eating during stress is even better than grabbing healthy choices. Hobbies are great alternatives, if you have any that is. Myself, I guess blogging is a new hobby of sorts. When tempted to get into the chow down line, jumping on the blogs is a great way to avoid doing so.

I know some who say reading a book does it for them. Reading reduces their stress and gets their mind focused else where. Reading, not-blog reading, but books I can do it for a while but if I am really stressed it isn't a quick enough relief. Writing on the other hand, that does calm me. Whether it be an email, a draft of tomorrow's blog, whatever; writing allows me some escape from the source of the stress.

When a work spending time on hobbies may not be ideal, nor may reading for leisure. Getting up and taking a walk to the opposite end of the building, or the other building, works for me. I work at a large corporate complex so this is an option for me sometimes. Otherwise at work if I can't wander, I change to another project. I manage a half-dozen projects at a time on average and when one is driving me to burritos, I put it aside and grab hold of another for a while. The point, do something different.

And of course, work out to relieve stress. Exercise leads to fitness, duh... which leads to increased energy, yep - duh... which leads to increased confidence, uh-huh it does... which leads to better ability to deal with stress, true? For me it is.

What do you do to put the stress chow down back in it's box?

Day 106 - 38% Progress

Sunday Sunday. A double up Sunday of sorts for me as I was not able to weigh in last Sunday while out on vacation. Weigh in day, the day each week we step on that scale and see if we have made any progress, or not.

This weigh in day I was apprehensive over. Vacation was a great time, but I did take a few indulgences which had my confidence in check as I approached the scale. True, yes I did get in some exercise while on vacation. No doubt that had to help. But did it help enough to undue the effects of the pork tenderloin sandwich at Cozy Dog? Or the bbq burnt ends at Arthur Bryant's? Or the pizza at Garcia's? Or anything else I ate that I wouldn't have enjoyed in excess had I not been on vacationing and relaxing my choices regarding moderation, balance and portion control?

No, no way - was my mood as I approached the scale. Excuses entered my mind, things I could blame my weight gain on for this post. The food, lessor effort in exercise, stress, you name it, my mind was looking for the out to take.

A couple of steps to go before hopping on the scale and I start to negotiate with myself. What would a good weigh in be this day? I weighed in at 278.5 two weeks ago, before vacation; so considering the indulgences then if I am just below 280 that would be OK, right?

Or maybe, just maybe I will weigh in back at 278.5, if I just didn't gain anything that would be Good, right?

Or, what if I lost just 1.5 pounds instead of the 3 I expect myself to lose over any two week period; just half of what I was supposed to lose would be Great, right?

Or, well that is as far as I got before I was on the scale, show time. If I had just a second or two more, I might have dared to wonder if I had actually lost the 3 pounds I wanted, but I didn't.

And neither did I dare to wonder if I could have done even better than that. Too bad, because I should have.

The scale reports that I have now melted away 38% of the weight I want to lose. In all, 45.5 pounds have melted away in the past FIFTEEN weeks; 4 of them the past two weeks. Today I weighed in at 274.5 pounds. Oh Yeah!

Surprised myself indeed in my accomplishment of the past two weeks. Quite pleased to say the least.

How about you; what have you accomplished that caught you by surprised?
